It started on a fine, sunny Saturday afternoon. The shopping floor was busy and in absolute hullaballoo. I was just wandering around doing my regular window-shopping when suddenly this person caught my attention. It occurred to me as if a definite love at first sight. Never had I heard or seen anything like that, the size, the shape, the colour, everything was perfect. I knew this was something that was meant for me. I tried to get near him for a closer look but alas, my attempt was a major epic fail. With so many people around me, I could hardly move.

But hey! This wasn’t all about the man; it was the shoe he was wearing that caught my attention. With my keen eyes all I could manage to see was the label that read TOMS in bold letters and somehow the colour and the scripts seemed flawless. Well then, I lost the track of the person and gone was the shoe I fell in love with.

The thought of it kept lingering on my mind for a while but then the floor grew crazier and I got distracted. Moments later, I went strolling again, along the high street this time, entering every shop that read SALE in big and bold letters. It was then, I happened to come across a store that showcased shoes of all the hip brands I could think of.

I went in, not knowing what the store had in store for me. And there I saw my little hero, carefully tucked into one of those shelves for display. To my delight, those shoes came in even more beautiful prints and different designs but somehow I could feel that this wasn’t everything that TOMS had to offer.

“There must be more to it”, I thought to myself and with a heavy heart I walked out of the store without the shoes that I had fallen for so badly. But I knew I had made the right decision, for I would now haunt it on the Internet and would have more options to choose from.

Finally, at home, I sat down and started Googling TOMS. I was checking its official website when something else caught me off guard.

With every pair you purchase. TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need. ONE FOR ONE.

With my growing curiosity I went into the details of the brand and the videos said it all.
It was in 2006, American traveller Blake Mycoskie who happens to be the founder of TOMS befriended children in Argentina and found they had no shoes to protect their feet. Wanting to help, he created TOMS, a company that would match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need. Blake returned to Argentina with a group of family, friends and staff later that year with 10,000 pairs of shoes made possible by TOMS customers. They’ve been helping developing countries with poor children who cannot afford to buy shoes by giving them a pair for every pair that their customers buy.

Ever since he and his company has managed to give away more than 1,000,000 pairs of shoes till date. Recently they’ve also introduced a new line of eyewear which works the same way- “ONE FOR ONE”. With every pair of sunglasses we buy, there’s another person receiving eye care that he or she needs. And the most interesting fact is, Nepal stands up as the first country to receive their help for people with vision impairment.

I don’t know for sure if their range of eyewear is out in the stores yet other than online but it’s one of the definite things to buy in my wish list and trust me it’s not only because of the charity purpose you would want to buy one of their products. It’s their design and comfort that lures you.

I’ve had my TOMS for more than couple of months now, and I am not even joking when I say that I wore it for continuous 3 weeks without giving it a break as soon as I bought it. I’ve had my bunch of friends buy it for them too as I talk about it so much and tell them how comfortable that shoe is. I believe I am helping in my own little ways to those deprived kids somewhere on the other side of the world to get a new pair of shoes, which they would not have gotten otherwise.

I am glad I pursued my crush and feel lucky to have TOMS with me in every step.
